Edward Cheserek is a young, Kenyan-born runner currently attending the University of Oregon. I began documenting his career during his senior year of high school at St. Benedict's Prep in Newark, New Jersey in the fall of 2012. Edward is the kind of athlete that only comes around every few decades, the kind that defines an era. Every race that he runs he dominates, not in the sense that he wins by a great distance, but rather that he changes the way the other athletes race. He is altering the fundamental strategies and techniques of racing today. Matthew Futterman, a writer at the Wall Street Journal, published an article titled, "Why Kenya's Edward Cheserek is America's Next Great Runner.” In it he outlines the hope Edward might obtain U.S. citizenship, and then run in the 2016 Olympics for the United States. There is no doubt that when it comes time for the Olympics, Edward will be at that top competitive level. Which nation he can run for, however, is up in the air.
